Intilaaqah-Abu Dhabi is based on the Shell LiveWIRE International programme, an initiative developed by Shell and launched or about to be launched in a number of countries throughout the world.

The aims of Intilaaqah-Abu Dhabi are to provide young nationals with the opportunity to receive training and encouragement to develop their own business ideas into successful businesses.

It is based on a scheme that has been running successfully in the UK since 1982 and has been generating a lot of interest not only in the UK but also in a number of other countries around the world.

Shell Abu Dhabi in conjunction with five local partners: Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce & Industry, National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Ernst & Young and the Abu Dhabi Men's and Women's Colleges of the Higher Colleges of Technology will now launch the project in the emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Target Audience

Candidates will be drawn from young UAE nationals between the ages of 18 and 32. He or she may be nearing the completion of their studies or may be graduates/diploma holders but unable to find adequate employment or they may be working but anxious to start their own business. Candidates do not have to be graduates nor do they have to have well developed ideas for a business all they need to do is show enthusiasm and express a desire to explore the possibility to become owner managers.

Process

Basically, there are three elements to the scheme:

  • Initial idea.
  • Formal teaching.
  • Mentoring.

This stage is divided into the following two areas:

  • Individuals with business ideas.
  • Individuals without business ideas.
  • Mentoring.

If a potential candidate feels that he/she has a good idea for a business then he/she can put the idea to the Intilaaqah management team.

If the idea is deemed to be a good one and if the individual meets the selection criteria then he/she can go forward to the next stage.

If candidates do not have specific business ideas but are keen to explore the possibility of starting their own business then they too can be admitted to the next stage of the programme

Idea/skill development

During this period the candidates' ideas will be researched in more detail, they will receive formal training in how to set up and run a small business and they will be taught how to develop a business plan.

Mentorship

As in other countries an important element of the Intilaaqah programme will be the mentoring of candidates to ensure that they have the best opportunity to develop a successful business.
