Importance of SmartPass
project enables the use of unified data entry for online government transactions. Every person would have a unified ID number that could be used for accessing eServices of the federal and local government entities. In addition, it facilitates an easy access to all of the entities’ provided services.
The project comes in the context of the national efforts aiming to achieve the pillars of the ‘inclusive government’, and improving the electronic/mobile government consistently with the concept of ‘interconnected government’ that the UAE aspires to achieve.
The application of SmartPass would improve user experience, avail quality services and increase user satisfaction, which will contribute to users’ happiness as the ultimate goal of the mGovernment.
SmartPass will allow users to complete their transactions easily and securely without having to visit the government entities, as well as providing a number of transactions in various government entities through single sign-on.
For the government entities, applying SmartPass provides reliable customers’ data, which would enable the entity to provide eServices as if the customer is present, as well as acquiring and authenticating needed details of the applications’ identity.
Features of SmartPass
These are some of the features of the SmartPass:
- A single account with a username and password
- A single sign-on to all government services
- An updatable user profile including username, password, mobile number and eMail
- The ability to request a reset of the Emirates ID pin number.
The SmartPass system was built according to the best international practices and policies which guarantee confidentiality of personal information. Therefore, it is better to use SmartPass to log in to entity websites instead of an iFrame or web service/API (application programming interface).
Steps to use SmartPass
- Insert your Emirates ID in the card reader
- Enter the four-digit pin number of your Emirates ID
- Enter the following mandatory data:
- Your Mobile phone number
- Your eMail Address
- Your user Name
- Your password
- You will receive a six-digit validation code in an SMS to your mobile phone number you entered
- Enter the six-digit validation code you received and click the submit button
- Upon receiving the confirmation message, you have successfully signed up for the SmartPass service.
To make the registration process easier, the TRA and the UAE mGovernment availed the service through dedicated SmartPass service kiosks distributed in many locations.

Status of the SmartPass project
Eleven government entities participated in the first phase of Smart Pass, including:

SmartPass service can be accessed through dedicated SmartPass devices (service kiosks) located across the UAE. Currently, there are 300 SmartPass devices, and the TRA plans to increase the number to 900 devices.
Many of These devices operate around the clock, and customers can use their Emirates ID card to complete their transaction through the device’s card reader.
